4 … ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “Everyone of the house of Israel who sets up his idols in his heart, and puts before him what causes him to stumble into iniquity, and then comes to the prophet, I the LORD will answer him who comes, according to the multitude of his idols, 5 that I may seize the house of Israel by their heart, because they are all estranged from Me by their idols.”’ 6 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “Repent, turn away from your idols, and turn your faces away from all your abominations. (Ezekiel 14:4-6 NKJV)
God was upset at Israel, because they would deliberately setup idols (definition of idol: anything that we put before God, that is becomes a point of worship instead of God, or takes our hearts, minds, and time away from God) in their hearts instead of worshipping the True God! God called upon them to repent (that is, feel remorse, acknowledge the error, and actively change their actions) and turn away from the idols (that is, to quit having all their idols in their lives, in any capacity), and then turn their faces (that is, the focus of their lives – what they look at or toward, what they desire and concentrate on) away from their sin. God wanted them to turn to Him!
God wants the same thing for us today! No, we are not all Israelites. However, God is the “same, yesterday, today and forever” and He wants the same things from us as He did from the israelites. He wants us to be free from idols in our lives, and to live for Him. If we are born-again, we realize this. But we often do not live like we should. We are truly hurting ourselves in this case. We are, shooting ourselves in the foot! We cause our own pain because of our own sin.
Do we have idols in our lives? Anything we put before God, or more importance than God, is an idol. For some, there are ‘gross sins’ that many can easily see: drunkeness, pornography, violence, greed, power-hungry, etc. Other idols are less apparent, but just as devastating: envy, anger, irritation, lack of mercy (i.e. judgmental attitude), lack of love (i.e. ‘they deserve it’), etc.
There are even some things that are good, wholesome, necessary things that can become idols when they are given greater priorities in our lives than God has: ministry, family, money (i.e. the necessary provisioning of our families, not the lustful greed of monetary excesses), etc.
God is calling on us to repent of these idols in our lives, put them away from ourselves and our actions, and quit focusing on them. So (for instance) if our issue is a judgmental attitude, then we need to recognize that it is wrong, decide to not be judgmental, quit dwelling on the item or items that we feel is wrong, and instead start focusing that time on Jesus Christ (our Savior and Lord – this will not work for anyone that is not born-again!) and asking Him to give us the strength to really put aside that idol and quit it forever!
Whatever our idol is, let’s turn from it today! If God’s people would just turn from their wicked ways, He could still bless our lives and our land!
